The first diet suggestion I came across that really helped was on www.splendicity.com, “to keep yourself accountable buy a good scale!” They went on to say to use the scale everyday, “this way you can monitor even the slightest weight gain.” So I did and made a habit of weighing in every morning. What a difference this made. Not only could I see the pounds come off, but also could see them go on. The second I gained a pound I was able to cut back that day, and exercise more. This helped me from going to far into the weight gain again. I was also able to look at what I had eaten prior to that morning weigh-in to see how it affected my weight. Found cheese usually brought my weight up, don’t know why, but it did, so started to limited cheese. Data supports my daily weigh-ins. From www.yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com, “Those who weighed in daily lost 12 pounds on average versus an average of 6 pounds for those who weighed themselves weekly” It goes on to state, “those who skipped the scale gained 4 pounds on average.” Good reason to buy a scale and do a daily weigh in.
The second thing I tried was eating more vegetarian meals. Being a person who ate steak every Sunday and believes meat is good for her blood type this was more difficult. However, I found by eating more legumes I felt full. I also tried many of Dr. Weil’s recipes and found them delicious. Another help was sodium free, no sugar vegetable soups, very satisfying for a meal and low in fat and calories. I also tried eating a rainbow of vegetables. What a concept. I was stuck in the acceptable vegetable groove my mother had cooked for me when I was growing up. We didn’t eat red peppers, Japanese eggplant, pumpkin, but all of these are delicious prepared the proper way.
Another thing I read about was the amount of sugar we consume. One of the worst culprits is soda. So I decided to cut soda out all together. Wow, for a person that drank Pepsi’s everyday this was murder. The first week, I had terrible headaches. But the pounds kept coming off so I kept to my resolve of eating and drinking healthy.
About this time I do remember feeling very deprived that I was indeed losing weight but no one was noticing, no one was seeing the new me. Had a need for chocolate, sweets, something that would say you could have this and weight loss too. Knew it was wrong, but gave myself permission to eat some on Sunday. Not a large quantity just enough. This opened up a whole new area that stills works for me today.
