Over The Counter Treatments for Heartburn:
- Antacids-For heart burn, antacids help to minimize stomach acids. Some popular antacids include:
- Alka-Seltzer-I’ve used this only when I developed milder cases of heart burn and it worked well.
- Tums-I used this when I had severe heartburn and worked really well.
- Milk of Magnesia-They have new flavors in this one, wish that was the case when I was pregnant, couldn’t get past the taste.
- Pepto Bismol-This is supposed to aid in heart burn and stomach upset, never worked for me.
- Mylanta
- Maalox
- Surpass Gum
- Gaviscom
- Rolaids-I love this for heart burn, works quickly and effectively
- Titralac
- Acid Blockers-relieves stomach acid and sour stomach and there are two that contain histamine antagonists (H2 antagonist) and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which minimizes the production of stomach acid. The ones that contain H2 antagonists and are available over the counter are:
- Axid AR
- Pepcid AC
- Tagamet HB
- Zantac 75
Some over the counter medications approved by the FDA (for a 14 day use) to treat frequent heart burn are Prisolec and Prevacid. The above drugs are also available in prescription strength if needed. Although these medications are effective in most cases that involve minimal to moderate heartburn, if heart burn symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, you should visit the doctor. Also, if you are pregnant consult with your doctor before taking medications to relieve heartburn.
