Exercise is not always enough, relaxation techniques such as meditation, sleep, and dietary changes. Meditation takes moments, it is completely free and involves clearing your mind of the stressful situations that cause Cortisol levels to rise. Many religions also speak of prayer. While Meditation has been associated with Yoga it does not always have to accompany it. On the other hand sleep plays a major factor in stress levels. The average adult needs seven to eight hours of sleep while the average child needs about nine hours of sleep. Currently adults average five hours of sleep. Depression and stress have both been associated with lack of sleep. Certain foods such as caffeine and alcohol can affect stress level and subsequently Cortisol levels in those who endeavor to lose weight.
