Make a Real Change
Successful dieting is a lifestyle-change, not a temporary fix. Although there is no shortage of “crash diets” advertised on the Internet, these diets will only work temporarily because no real, long-term sustainable changes will be made. In addition, rapid weight loss is usually about 90% water, which will return after your body re-hydrates. To successfully lose and keep the pounds off, you must make changes to your eating habits that you can sustain for the rest of your life.
Find healthier foods that you enjoy to substitute for your favorite sugary treat. Don’t tempt yourself. Avoid buying certain foods at the grocery store that may entice you later. Often we reach in our cupboard for what is most convenient, so stock your kitchen with healthy convenience foods. Use non-food alternatives to cope with stress. Instead, spend time with friends or family in a social setting, such as a sports event, the beach or the mall. Read a new book or watch a fun movie. Pamper yourself with a bubble bath. Finding a non-food alternative to help with relaxation will keep you from overeating.
Most things are fine in moderation. Severely restricting your diet can often lead to binge eating—an uncontrollable consumption of food. If you really want that cookie, it’s okay to eat it—just be sure to eat the recommended amount and to keep your indulgences as infrequent as possible. Never feel guilty for eating something. Instead, simply strive to exert better control next time. And remember, it’s not always about the big goal. Congratulate yourself for every little victory you gain in your quest to lose.
