addictions vs. self-awareness

I have had GLIMPSES of this freedom in my life; it is NOT a constant, but the WORK that I practice in my daily life is a constant. If I discover myself reaching for a food or a head trip that will only mask and suppress my feelings, I will NOTICE it and do something else. When I feel discomfort or dis-ease in my soul, I will look for the SOURCE and try to work it through. I also have good people in my life who keep me on track, who keep it real and for whom I am deeply grateful.

We don’t have to DIE or MAIM ourselves with our addictions. We are, in the purest sense, beautiful beings who came to this earth for a reason– to be our best selves and to help others achieve their own bliss. Because there is so much help, information, source-material, internet and common sense all around us, the only excuse we can use for not healing is simply that we don’t WANT to. It is a choice; and to heal the wounds of our past takes courage, willingness, understanding and a great deal of compassion for ourselves and for others.

I learned a powerful and life-affirming lesson from someone once (I forget who), who admonished me to treat my inner child in a way that mirrors the treatment I want for myself. In other words, to treat myself as if I were a precious, wounded, frightened, insecure and untrusting little girl—the girl that I WAS as a child. If I can look at her and feel the hurt, loneliness, sense of isolation and hopelessness that she felt as a child, then I can treat myself today, as if I were the cat’s meow, or royalty, or as the beautiful, caring, nurturing, wise and soulful person that I truly am. She is inside of me, and when I remember, I honor, respect, value and love her. What more can we expect out of our lives? If we can pull that off, we will have the world at our feet and never have to use addiction, or abuse, or victimization as an excuse again. That is what “wholeness” and recovery mean; when we love and cherish ourselves, we can be living our true bliss!
