Going a little Paleo…

by Gigi on August 24, 2010

I have been scouting for a balanced diet that will help my muscles pop out. My goal is to lose weight, but my main concern was losing the fat and not the muscles. I didn’t want to get on a diet that will starve my muscles of its needed nutrition.

After reading through countless diets and meal on line and on print, I found out about the Paleolithic diet.

The Paleolithic diet is a simple dietary lifestyle that is based on foods that we ate PRIOR to agriculture and animal husbandry. Think of a caveman hunting for animals for meat and foraging for vegetables and fruits.

We now live in a time where our meals mostly constituted of grains, potatoes (think french fries!), sugary and processed food. Where convenience is the utmost concern, rather than toiling sometime in preparing our food from scratch.

I have tried doing the paleolithic diet for a week now. And it is very, very difficult. Going paleo just not mean eating meats and veggies. But eating the organic and non-processed kind. Meats should be from Grass-fed cows and free range chickens. And the vegetables that you put in your plate ideally should be organically grown and free from pesticides and chemicals.

Which is pretty hard to find from where I live. And buying organic vegetables is far more expensive than buying the normal supermarket ones. And grains such as rice, bread and pasta is NOT included in a paleolithic diet. And I love bread!

You may wonder where to get your carbohydrates from since grains are not included in a paleolithic diet. Cavemen didn’t bake bread back in their days. They only ate meat and vegetables… Their carbohydrates mainly came from the vegetables and fruits that they ate. And mostly, they ate their  plant foods raw.

Why go paleo in the first place? For one it’s very healthy and will help feed your muscles. And most importantly your brain will be in tip top shape too – without the mind-numbing fake foods. Living on this kind of nutrition lifestyle will give you more energy, minus the acne and without that stubborn belly fat. Why not going a “little” at first?

I have gone just a “little” paleo for a week now. There are times that I still had a serving of wheat bread in the mornings and I still need that sweetness in my morning coffee, and substituted brown sugar for raw honey. And ate mostly fruits and nuts as snacks. And buy our greens from an organic weekend market nearby. Our meats, chicken and fish are unfortunately not all natural yet, and came from the supermarket.

The biggest challenge when you’re on a paleolithic diet is eating out. It is almost impossible to find meals that will suit your needs. Almost everything there is out there are fake foods. It is no easy task. I find myself stumbling in the morning most especially. But I make sure to make up for the rest of the day. Other than that, I have given myself one eat -anything-I-want day and indulge in a pizza or that scoop of chocolate ice cream.

These small indulges are a bit hard to let go off! I still need time for that. Just not yet.
