Professional treatments for Food Addiction:

There is a saying among those at Overeaters Anonymous “when you are addicted to drugs you put the tiger in the cage to recover; when you are addicted to food you put the tiger in the cage, but take it out three times a day for a walk”

According to research, about 80% of people who seek professional treatment for a food addiction experience a huge reduction in their symptoms. Things have changed in the area of treatment for food addiction in the last decade, as professionals are not focusing so much on food intake but on a person’s behavioral patterns. Some areas that are evaluated in a person’s life are the  emotional, social, spiritual, physiological, and psychological, in assessing treatment for food addiction.

Many options are available for people who want to seek treatment for a food addiction. Some professionals suggest that a therapist is the best answer for those who have eating disorders.  The eating disorder could be a result of past or present abuse. When a therapist identifies the underlying cause of the eating disorder, they may be able to help them develop a healthy relationship with food.

In addition, support groups like Overeaters Anonymous, Emotions Anonymous, and Food Addicts Recovery Anonymous are beneficial in that they allow individuals to share their experiences with those that have similar issues and this form of treatment has been extremely effective.

Treatment Goals:

  • Teaches healthy eating patterns
  • Teaches coping skills for stress triggers
  • Identifies underlying issues that started the food addiction
  • Returning to a healthy body weight
  • Long term recovery treatment

If any one feels that, they have a food addiction it is important that they seek private or professional help as this disorder can lead to death.  Identifying the problem is the first step and getting the help that is needed comes next.  Even if you feel that you do not need professional help it just may be time to focus on why you overeat. I did and now I just take it one day at a time.  Being healthy is worth it.
